In brief: I’m so excited to bring you this two-part conversation with badass psychologist, coach, and speaker Dr. Liz Powell! When we were chatting a couple months ago about recording a spot for the show, I asked what in particular was rolling around in her head at present. She said: “Top of mind for me would be thinking about relationships and how we move towards models that center consent and autonomy and agency, rather than models of coercion and control that our culture teaches us.”
I said that sounded perfect, right on the money. Issues of consent and agency aren’t just matters for the bedroom; they affect our daily lives any time we’re out in public sharing common space, our jobs (bosses, employees, and coworkers), and very definitely our government and other power structures. We talk about the way gender and relationship norms as well as white supremacy and the legacy of colonization are built into the ways we relate to each other — ways that uphold oppression.
Next week: How Do We Build Models That Center Consent & Agency?
