Making Our #Democracy Democratic w/ @FairVoteCA — #KatieSpeakShow Ep140 7/21/2018

In brief: “Ranking is intuitive,” I was told when I asked if switching from the election model most Americans are familiar with to the Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) that FAIR Vote California (along with the other FAIR Vote affiliates) advocates for creates ballot errors. It turns out, RCV isn’t just intuitive: it saves municipalities/states money, increases voter turnout, encourages more women and people of color to run, ELECTS more women and people of color (by a massive margin), and — get this — reduces the rancor in electioneering to almost nil. I know it sounds unbelievably amazing, but that’s not even the whole of it. Luckily, Jennifer Pae, Director of FAIR Vote CA, and Pedro Hernandez, the deputy director were willing to go over the details with me for almost an hour.

In this era of frustrating (at best) national politics and rage fatigue, I’m betting many of you will find the information in this episode reinvigorating; it turns out, we have power in our cities and states to make the election process more democratic — which can only have positive implications in our communities and our country.
