In brief: Danielle Corcione and I talked about many things in this extended interview, but the words that are still stuck in my mind are: “All our labor is a loan.” They’re right. The whole system.
We discussed their research on The Shitty Men List, ways we could begin to make progress on protections for freelancers who are disproportionately marginalized and disproportionately subject to the actions of TSML. Danielle explained some important media monopoly technicalities while I sobbed over my hometown Chicago Tribune restructuring. (Think “Office Space,” but really.) And before we signed off, we paused to explain to the reluctant many that “they” is not newly a singular pronoun, so STOP OPPRESSING THROUGH GRAMMAR.
