In brief: The outstanding Victoria Law is back on the show to discuss the current state of women’s prisons and what pregnancy behind bars looks and feels like in this country. UPDATE/Note: we discuss a North Carolina policy that advocates have put an end to just last week. The practice of shackling pregnant inmates — including while they are giving birth — is widespread; NC is hardly an outlier. So while Victoria uses specific states like NC as examples, keep in mind that (insomuch as it would be possible to treat someone humanely inside of a cage) the uphill battle for humane treatment of pregnant people behind bars is ongoing.
We also took a few minutes to discuss book recommendations from Victoria’s now annual commitment to read 50 books each year written by women of color! We’re both reading enthusiasts, so I couldn’t pass up the chance to chat about what to add to my list. As is both of our natures, throughout the episode we give listeners ways to get involved; everyone has a part they can play.
