#StopTheSham: #FightBackTX at SCOTUS w/@andreagrimes & @nataliefstclair of @FundTexasChoice — #KatieSpeakShow Ep27 03/05/2016

In brief: Well, here we are. HB2 — the law made famous by Wendy Davis and The Angry Mob’s successful filibuster nearly three years ago — has been heard by the Supreme Court. Oral arguments were heard Wednesday; supporters rallied on the SCOTUS steps. We won’t have a decision until some time in June, but I couldn’t miss this opportunity to talk about the human rights crisis already affecting the state of Texas with Andrea Grimes of The Texas Observer (and also of #TacoOrBeerChallenge fame) and Natalie St. Claire of Fund Texas Choice. The pack a great one-two punch of legislative and technical knowledge and first person connection to the individuals currently facing the greatest challenges accessing abortion care.

I give a recap of the Whole Woman’s Health path to the Supreme Court, play some audio from the amazing Dr. Willie Parker at the #StopTheShame rally in support of WWH outside of Wednesday’s oral arguments, and humbly tack an addendum on to Dr. Parker’s cure for what ails us.

REMINDER: posting pro-choice, pro-abortion articles and memes to your social media is activism. There is no role shaming in movement work; we succeed at culture change when visibility is greatest and it becomes overwhelmingly clear that the former status quo is no longer acceptable. You never know who in your networks will need to see that you are a safe space for them; you never know who will find relief from unnecessary, debilitating stigma about decisions they have made. You bolster the work of those who are full-time members of the movement and take the pressure off organizations like abortion funds when individuals know where in their personal networks to go for help.
