In brief: With the Roe v. Wade anniversary around the corner, this show starts a two-parter: this week is the state of abortion rights in Europe and next week I’ll talk to U.S.-based advocates/experts.
Note: This show is available to stream and download for free so it can be accessible for everyone. If you’re able, consider becoming a supporter for as little as $1/month at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!
I’m so excited about this show because both guests had to fit in time across many time zones and an ocean. Sarah Kay a lawyer with the European Court of Human Rights and has lived all over Europe and in the states for stretches as well. She’s from Ireland — you’re welcome for the delightful accent — and now lives in France, so she’s been immersed in the cultural opposites as far as abortion access and care.
My other guest is Mara Clarke, a U.S.-born UK transplant who had worked with abortion funds in the states and upon relocating to England looked for similar ways to get involved. Finding none at the time that helped with transportation, funding, and access from areas like Northern Ireland where abortion is criminalized, she founded and now runs the Abortion Support Network.
I also had a few thoughts about what was missing from the State of the Union and some recommendations on who to support should that sort of oversight bother you as well.
Quotes of the Show from Sarah Kay:
“Just like many other aspects of many other issues, we need to listen to women.”
“You can never remove the need for abortion entirely; there is no risk zero, that’s not how biology works.”
