‘MURICA: #Constitution & Cultural Traditions — #KatieSpeakShow Ep15 12/12/2015

In brief: As promise, I bring you Part II of my conversation with Ijeoma Oluo (already in progress) and a history less on guns and what the actual Constitution says from social justice campaign guru Cliff Schecter. This is not your typical gun regulation/slam the NRA and the enthusiasts conversation.

I published my unpaid nanny story and, as expected, the poverty shamers are out in force. Everything from calling my story “trash” to saying that because I only site stats on rent, transit, and food, my math is “incorrect” and I’m “not credible” — when pointing out that just three bills for many take as much as 60 or 70% of their income and that’s before they actually dare to buy anything or pay down debt. Good times.

You get the second half of my chat with Ijeoma Oluo where we go into anxiety and depression and mental health stigma. Her honesty on these issues is one of the many reasons I admired her long before we were colleagues.

And I had my friend Cliff Schecter — author, media contributor, actual Constitutional-era historian, and social justice campaign guru (most often social security, gun regulation, and reproductive rights) — stop by to explain in brief what the Second Amendment enthusiasts get wrong about the Founding Fathers, the Constitution (it’s not what you think), and the current state of gun regulation in this country. You’re going to want to hear this before seeing your conservative family members over the holidays.
