In brief: I say this every week, but I love this episode. You get to meet one of my favorite academic folks, Steph Herold, who brings her education, smarts, and culture change work together for you. And Pamela Merritt is back! She’s all things social justice in Missouri, so for obvious reasons, she is my first repeat guest. I also prerecorded a Thanksgiving rant on the emotional labor so many of us have to do at the holidays.
Note: This show is available to stream and download for free so it can be accessible for everyone. If you’re able, consider becoming a supporter for as little as $1/month at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you!
I love my academic people! And my social justice people! And I love it when they’re the same people! Steph Herold and Pamela Merritt are an outstanding one-two punch. We talk about a new study on how abortion is AWESOME and good for people, what’s going on in Missouri, some pop culture and political climate.
My intro is very Thanksgiving-centric — which is very ADHD of me. I recorded it before Thanksgiving, but it’s airing and posting after Thanksgiving. However, as my good friend Normandie reminded me as she was cooking our Thanksgiving dinner and I was putting my show notes together: it holds through the rest of the holiday season. True story. So many of us do the emotional labor of hiding something(s) over the holidays to make other people comfortable. I give some love to you doing that labor and have a few recommendations for those who are privileged not to need to.
Quote of the Show: “We know that data and logic don’t necessarily make a big difference in issues that are emotional, moral, cultural — the way that abortion is. Abortion is a medical procedure, but it’s also steeped in this larger culture war about people’s right to determine their own identity, about sex, about power, people’s right to determine their own lives and their own futures.” — Steph Herold
