#FuckStopPatriarchy

UPDATE: I’ve been invited to Texas! I’m heading down to report on Stop Patriarchy because, frankly, it shouldn’t have to be the job of busy, hard-working, over-burdened Texas activists to police a costal co-opting group. YOU can help support my reporting here: Expose Stop Patriarchy!

In brief: Stop Patriarchy is not a feminist group. Despite my holding the same basic position on abortion availability, their co-opting of Civil Rights language, diversion of funds from organizations doing real work, disregard for the needs of local, grassroots organizers in (especially) red states and their sex worker shaming slogan are all reasons I cannot support them and will be more vocally opposed to their campaigns going forward.

UPDATE: Texas activists, writers, reproductive justice fighters and their allies have issued a statement opposing Stop Patriarchy. You can add your name to stand with them and — if you are able — donate to the groups they list who are doing the work of helping Texas residents while working toward long-term access in the state. Go to “Texans For Reproductive Justice: United Statement in Opposition to Stop Patriarchy” for more information and to add your name.

Note: This is what I do now, full-time. I’m completely committed to changing the face of clinic access in this country. If you can, consider supporting my work so I can do more of it by clicking HERE and making a one-time or recurring (just click the box) contribution. All the funding goes to equipment, travel to other conferences/clinics/meetings with pro-choice legislators/training new escort programs and supplies. Thank you!

#FuckStopPatriarchy:

I’ve kept my mouth at least partially shut on Stop Patriarchy for quite some time, mostly due to my not wanting to confuse my opposition to their tactics, tone-deafness and co-opting style with an opposition to their position on abortion availability. I am, absolutely, without exception, all in favor of abortion on demand. State funded, in fact.

However. Fuck Stop Patriarchy.

When you insist on showing up after being asked not to by rural clinics who are working overtime to create community support for their very existence in cities where providers have been murdered and neighbors fear for their safety no matter their positions on reproductive care…

…that’s co-opting for your purpose, not fighting for our rights.

When you hijack the Texas filibuster anniversary party livestream to redirect to your fundraiser for a group of events disgustingly, not intersectionally, named after a group of Civil Rights heroes…

…that’s co-opting for your purpose, not fighting for our rights.

When you think you have the right to tell providers — who are heroically doing their jobs despite the murder of their colleagues and friends — that they aren’t conveying the right messages publicly about their own work…

…that’s co-opting for your purpose, not fighting for our rights.

When you’re so committed to the men vs women narrative that you shout down discussions about the queer community and gender non-conforming people….

…that’s co-opting for your purpose, not fighting for our rights.

When you are a front for a man (Bob Avakian) who’s goal is to purify our airwaves, internets, reading materials, etc of pornography as part of his Revolutionary Communist Party leadership platform…

…that’s co-opting for your purpose, not fighting for our rights.

When you are so afraid of real female agency that you advertise an anti-porn protest on the SAME poster as a debate with sex-worker organizer, author, and badass feminist Melissa Gira Grant…

…that’s co-opting for your purpose, not fighting for our rights.

No, really. They did that:

Screen Shot 2014-07-05 at 3.41.09 PM

Screen Shot 2014-07-05 at 3.41.16 PM

[By the way, you should order/purchase Melissa’s book — from wherever you buy them or check it out as an e-book at your library. ”Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work” is short, to the point, brilliant and important for our broader work as feminists and allies. She is frank and fantastic. Go get it.]

Being anti-agency, anti-LGBTQ, anti-intersectionality, anti-listening, anti-community-building, and pro-redirecting of funds away from organizations helping human beings on the ground makes you NOT FEMINIST. You are also not humanitarian, not helpful, and not revolutionary.

Seriously; not revolutionary. There’s nothing revolutionary about perpetuating the patriarchy and that’s exactly what you’re doing. Worse yet, you’ve convinced your followers that they are fighting the patriarchy simply because you use shock tactics — which you’re only doing so that you can say anyone opposed to you is only afraid of your radical message.

Well, I’m not afraid of you. I think you’re awful and weak and have no real ideas for problem solving or community building. You want me to “lift my sights” from your theft of my own radical language while insinuating I’m not radical enough? Fuck you.

You only want me to “lift my sights” because you’ve figured out that I see you. Right where you are. You think I’m arguing over “owning oppression?” That’s rich from a group who uses the phrase “Freedom Ride” without any sense of the historical theft and disrespect to the struggle of an entire people to escape abject, systematic, barbaric enslavement.

Fuck Stop Patriarchy.

They’re going to Texas next month. They’ve been asked not to come. They’ve been asked to stop advertising as though Texas activists and organizations have invited them. Of course, none of these requests are being honored. They’re going to Texas to show the red state, rural folk what a protest looks like. Apparently this isn’t a protest:

Texas Capitol

And neither is this:

Texas Capitol

Apparently.

If you want to stand against the ridiculous notion that Texans don’t know how to stand up for themselves without a bunch of transphobic, slut-shaming, fake revolutionaries taking over, here’s who you donate to:

♦ Lilith Fund; donate HERE
♦ Texas Equal Access Fund; donate HERE
♦ Whole Woman’s Health Clinics; donate/support HERE

And/or donate to your local abortion fund. National Network of Abortion Funds can help you connect to ways you can volunteer and/or donate by clicking HERE.

There are people working to change stigma and organizations doing amazing work. It would be impossible to list them all here. (I know, I need to make a public Twitter list; I’ll get on that.) The people I regularly RT are parts of those groups and they are heroes in every sense of the word: they’re saving lives and fighting for my rights and yours. And when they call for collaboration, help, funding and signal boosting I AM THERE. Every time. And you should be too. But I am not about to start telling them how to handle their business.

We have precious little time on this planet; I implore you to find a better use for yours than joining with, reading, supporting or even (after this) listening to anything about Stop Patriarchy — or anyone claiming to be the only radical/real/pure anything for any cause. The more you have to tell me how righteous you are, the less I believe you.

  1. Suppose Bob Avakian were able to organize a violent revolution which would kill off all of the capitalists, Christians and other religions. Suppose he was a kindly leader of a vanguard party which sincerely tried to lead us in the direction of communist utopia. At some point after his death there would be another Joseph Stalin who would turn the whole think into another Soviet nightmare. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Whether it be a dictatorship of the proletariat or a dictatorship of a facist king the result is the same: death, terror and loss of individual freedom. The answer is not more government but rather less. What about freedom of choice? Freedom to chose abortion, freedom to chose capitalism, freedom to chose religion. Power to families and individuals not governments. The RCP and other communist parties are not compatible with the pro choice movement because communism, its Das Capital bible, its prophets — Marx, Lenin and Avakian are anti choice.

  2. If someone would like to help you with info on this (and not communicate through one of the large social media sites), how would they get ahold of you? I despise these assholes and have things to share.

  3. I have 8 sisters and two daughters many of whom have had abortions. The right to abortion is under serious attack. Why attack SP? I think their energy and bold approach is really needed.
All the pioneer women feminists came under savage attack when they first stepped out.

Why are you playing such a cowardly backward role in all of this?

I just don’t get it. It’s kind of lame and borders on gross opportunism. If you don’t support the ARFR don’t go on it.

I come from a family of 12. Kind of like Angela’s Ashes as far as the oppression and abuse that went on. Forced motherhood is female enslavement….

  4. Open Letter # Fuck Stop Patriarchy
    What a silly little blog!
    Full of silly little ideas!
    Written by silly little people!
    Full of silly little fears
Oh how these ideas are small parochial and petty. Let me look at them one by one.
    1) The silliest of these is the alleged co-opting of the phrase Freedom Ride. Look these abortion rights fighters are on a bus tour riding around Texas. It’s just that simple.
    2) Then there is the silly notion that there are outside agitators coming down to Texas to stir up trouble. Some how this is a “Texas” issue. Okay was it a “Spain” issue during the Spanish Civil war where heroic volunteers fought the fascists? Was it a “Mississippi” issue during the Mississippi Freedom Summer? White racists claimed it was “outside agitators stirring up the “Good Negroes” in Mississippi. Was it a “Seattle” issue when the World Trade Organization me there? No it was not. With the right to abortion under attack and abortion rights being ripped away with more force than a hurricane you have to say the least some piss poor Texas solutions. I’m afraid Texas is in need of some outside ideas worse than some sick people need penicillin!
    3) The clinics don’t want trouble. Sorry trouble is all ready there. Some lawyers did not want outside lawyers to defend the Scottsborough Boys. Clarence Darrow was vilified by local lawyers for defending John Scopes, but he did anyway. Germans said ignore Hitler. Look what happened.
    4) All that clap trap about why people should not be against porn and prostitution. You act as if porn is a victimless crime. What industry goes out of its way to dehumanize people more than the sex industry? Porn is the fuel that feeds rape. And all this talk about “sex workers” is hogwash. Prostitutes are “Sex Slaves” You act as is your so-called “Sex Workers” sing the Internationale before servicing their johns! The old slaver that would go out by the slave quarters to rape young women would say, “All my slaves are happy here! Just listen to them sing!”
    5) You object to some people in Stop Patriarchy admitting to be supporters of Bob Avakian. This is your real beef! It isn’t that Bob Avakian is a man. No you applaud Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, John Brown, Steve Biko, Nelson Mandela and their leadership roles. Hell John Brown and Martin Luther King both were considered “outside agitators /trouble makers” etc. The point about Bob Avakian is that he is a communist! That bothers you! You are afraid he’s about to make all Texas a really red state. (Would that he could!) His uncompromising revolutionary politics scare you worse than the irrational politics of the right wing! And just like the Good Germans of the 1930’s and the Good Americans of the McCarthy era you are scared for your own careers! Don’t be think of how scared the other side if you united with Stop Patriarchy and helped improve the political atmosphere in Texas and on the world. The eyes of the world are on Texas do the right thing!

    • Well put Alan. It is a silly, petty, blog. Really not worth responding to. Katie must think that all the
front line feminists who are supporting the Frredom Ride are being duped. Pretty pathetic…

  5. “It appears you accept the “dominion” of this toxic culture over “sex workers” and all the pathetic
men addicted to porn and deepening the oppression of women.” Michael it seems as though you believe it’s not the fact that men watch porn that is the problem but the fact that porn exists for men to watch? That sounds a little like the “men wouldn’t rape women if women didn’t wear miniskirts argument to me”. Poor poor men. It’s not our fault we seek out increasingly degrading and toxic forms of pornography. After all we’re just addicts with no control over our own base desires, animals with no sense of right or wrong. If only someone would step in and take control of us, protect us from becoming addicted to this terrible porn we are so unable to resist due to our flawed natures. It would be for our own good of course.
Michael, as men we need to take responsibility for our own actions not find new ways in which to shirk that responsibility. We must hold both ourselves and other men accountable for the individual choices we all make.

  8. Katie it is you who is screwed up.

      • As interesting as your hash tag I suppose. I can’t believe a so called feminist would support the anti woman pornography that is promoted in this toxic culture.

        • I listen to the sex worker activists, writers and friends in my circle. That you think you have so much dominion over women that you can explain what is and is not degrading to an individual woman as well as the entire group leaves me unsurprised that you support Stop Patriarchy.

          • It appears you accept the “dominion” of this toxic culture over “sex workers” and all the pathetic
males addicted to porn and deepening the oppression of women. That is my opinion and thar is exactly why I support Stop Patriarchy. My niece works with women who are victims of the sex trafficking trade in Mexico. Few of them see themselves as “sex workers”. Most see themselves
as exploited and abused and live in fear of their “bosses”.

Your view I believe is textured by the petty privilege you have living in a country with so much
wealth, much of it stolen from the Third World.

That is my honest opinion. And yes my first email was petty. I apologize for that. I was angry.

            • There’s not doubt that mainstream porn has some misogynistic elements. But even if it were possible to get rid of it (yeah, right), it still discounts the many, many women out there who are sex workers because they enjoy it and find it empowering.

              • Or just do it because it’s what they do. I didn’t find bartending empowering (often the opposite) and playing the role was part of the job, but it made me money when I needed it and no one tried to save me from it because it was degrading. (Even though it often was because I never worked for myself.)

              • Hogwash! You sound like the old white slaver after getting home from getting it on with a young slave! He’d say ” Look my slaves are happy-Just listen to them sing!” You say some prostitutes find prostitution empowering-yeah right an Coleridge found Opium smoking inspiring, Burroughs enjoyed a little smack every now and again. The illusion of empowerment is not the reality of empowerment. You just don’t want to feel guilty about your closet desires to buy sex. Cut the crap about sex workers they aren’t workers they are slaves.
What do you call pimps Sex Employers Sex Supervisors?
I work with a homeless support group all the prostitutes I serve food to at a local community dinner say they want out. There are many groups who support these sex slaves and help them start up a new life!
Oh and one more thought! Perhaps there are a few women who think prostitution is empowering. There are women who get slugged around by their husbands who think hubby only slams them around as a sign of love. In other words as I said before the illusion of empowerment is just that. Those who can’t see their oppression are doomed to live the life of a slave!

            • Trafficking exists =/= all women in the sex industry are trafficked. I don’t debate logical fallacies, so I’m leaving it at that.

              • Let’s not forget that if sex work were decriminalized, it has been shown that trafficking would drop radically. If there’s no profit to be made in forcing people into sex work, the incentive goes away. And don’t even get me started on TERFs rampant in #StopPatriarchy.

                • Hogwash there is still trafficking it’s just legit! Sex work my eye-call it what it is SEX SLAVERY! If you had a kid sister would you want her to be a sex slave?

          • And you can just tail after your “sex worker” friends is silly. If you sister were smoking crack and saying it was her choice would you try and stop her? Did it ever dawn on you are just a small circle. Your circle my eye. That’s like saying all I know is what’s around me. If I see you mowing your lawn and the lawn mower has no blades I would say your efforts to cut the lawn were lame. Sorry sister your reply just doesn’t cut it!

          • I remember helping to build for a Take Back The Night March. We were going to march down a street with a whole lot of lights chanting “Yes Means Yes No Means No What ever we wear Where ever we go” Guess what a group of so called “Sex Worker activists” (sic) tried to advise us not to march! Why well it seems the street we were going to march down was one where these so-called “sex workers” (Is that local 69) plied their trade. It was also a street where there had be a large number rapes. So you so called “sex workers” sum up of Take Back The Night was like the line in that old Chuck Berry song “Don’t bother us leave us alone” It’s okay for them to service johns Rape victims have no rights. THAT”S a Slave outlook.
OH and one more thought ONLY CUSTODIANS SHOULD SERVICE JOHNS!

    • I hope you realize how transparently you and Alan appear to the casual outside observer as just shills for Stop Patriarchy. It’s wholly unconvincing, and unless your goal was to waste a couple of peoples’ time, you’ve failed here.

  9. The fact that Stop Patriarchy is basically a front group for the RCP and that this is a real problem is something that’s not brought up enough, even in critiques of Stop Patriarchy.

First, their ideals are fucked-up – the kind of society they’d like to create is based on Cultural Revolution-era Maoism. The reality of that society was a destructive totalitarian nightmare. While the RCP has a snowball’s chance in hell of actually pulling off a revolution to institute this kind of system, it still speaks poorly of them, and doesn’t exactly guide them to positive activism.

Second, they’ve always had problematic ideas on sexuality. They were explicitly anti-gay up until the mid 90s (homosexuality was seen as a form of “bourgeois decadence”), until they opportunistically changed their party line on the topic. Sex-negativity and revolutionary puritanism is still central to their analysis, and Stop Patriarchy’s problematic ideas are an expression of that.

Third, the group is little more than a political cult around Bob Avakian, devoted mainly to gaining more followers for Bob Avakian. The political activism of the RCP always leads back to that end. In that regard, they’re simply a far-left mirror of the Lyndon LaRouche group and are best viewed in that light.

    • Do you really think that Gloria Slteinem, Susan Bownmiller, Cornel West, and Mark Rufalo would
endorse a “cult group”? SP’s connection to the RCP is no big secret. So your info is no news flash – hate to break it to you.

Why don’t you just endorse the Democrstic Party because that’s where you are really coming from. A dead end in my opinion.

So do you anything else to say about the Abortion Rights Freedom Ride beyond lame red baiting?

I trust Sunsara Taylor. She is the real deal….

    • First off it seems there are a lot of non RCP members in Stop Patriarchy Look at all the people who support the Texas Abortion Rights Freedom Ride
Second your lack luster sum up of the RCP leads me to think you haven’t seriously read one paragraph about their new sum ups up of what communism is and should be about. No other group is talking about what went wrong with the past waves of communist revolutions
Thirdly the RCP did not as you say ” Opportuinstically ” change their views on supporting gay rights. They politically changed their views because they came to their senses through study and practice. Your sum up is like two left shoes -aint anything right about it. I abused drugs as a teenager. I wanted to be a positive force and a revolutionary so as of 1967 I have been clean and sober. Was I being a get over artist because I wanted to get out of a bad habit? The RCP was stuck in a bad out look. I thought people like you welcomed change.
Lastly the RCP is not a cult around Bob Avakian. He is their leader they are doing their best to make the world know more about him. You just don’t like his politics. They invade your comfort zone. Oh and while we are on the subject of cults of personality I hope you aren’t a Christian. I just know you wouldn’t be caught dead in a Jim Morrison, Bob Marley or Che T-Shirt

      • Why would you direct people to a christian Fascist Blog. That’s what Saynuthn’s Blog is! Are you so Anti Communist that you would side with this blogger?

        • It’s super hard at this point to tell who you’re directly this at. You’re replying to yourself, so it isn’t making much sense. Also, the way blogging works is that when someone quotes your website, it pings back to your page. Saynuthn quoted something of mine, so there’s a trail that brings their readers to my website, not the other way around as you seem to be assuming.

          • Yeah why is her blog in the Track Backs section? Oh and the blog likes the anti choice folks of Duck Dynasty

            • I encourage you to look up the definition of “back track.” (Hint: it means she linked to me and that notation let’s people know that someone else is using my content on their blog.) You have an odd fascination with this micro non-issue. I won’t be approving further comments from you.
              Best,
              Katie
