Thursday Reader (11/21/13)

Excerpts from my feeds

A word…

Wow. Texas. More than $55,000 raised from more than 800 individual donors.
I am still gathering my thoughts and absorbing what happened. I promise to have a post up about it by the weekend. For now, big BIG thanks to Irin Carmon and Jamil Smith of MSNBC for coming out and covering the event.
Irin, I know how exhausting your November has been with the special elections, outrageous bills being introduced and your attempt to be everywhere at once. You have my heartfelt gratitude.
Jamil, your work through The Melissa Harris-Perry Show is appreciated every day. Thank you for spreading the word this week and every week.

My apologies for the shortened Reader this week. And skipping the weekly update email. I had to pause my own work to help produce the telethon. It was totally worth it.

Shameless Plugs

TODAY!! My next live chat at Tawkers, “Accessibility is essential!” is today at 7pm EST with Virginia Pickel. Check out her piece on filibuster laws and their inherent discrimination at our Facebook Event Page and find out more about joining in!

The spectacular Dennis Trainor, Jr. interviewed me for The Resistance Report this week. We talked Texas, abortion restrictions, stigma and being unapologetic in our activism. Check out the most recent episode; subscribe to the AcronymTV YouTube channel and catch my segment when it airs!

My favorite three things:

No. 1: Two #1’s this week!

Texas. Again. Still. The confusing nature of this legal battle is something the right-wing extremists are counting on to alienate people. Jessica Mason Pieklo is all over it. Read everything she’s writing. Her latest:
Supreme Court Refuses to Block Texas’ Admitting Privileges Requirement

Pipelines are exploding, leaking and STILL being built. Check in with Brad Friedman:
Green News Report, 11/14/13

Lethal injection is not the only way we sentence people to death in this country. From The New York Times editorial board:
” A sentence of life in prison, without the possibility of parole, for trying to sell $10 of marijuana to an undercover officer? For sharing LSD at a Grateful Dead concert? For siphoning gas from a truck? The punishment is so extreme, so irrational, so wildly disproportionate to the crime that it defies explanation.”

Podcasts & clips:

I haven’t shared any Bill Maher yet. I don’t always love him (hello, DRONES), but he does occasionally make a point like no one else. Or his writers do. Either way, his delivery has a particular way of pounding home a point.
